I followed the tips above with MapSource and tried to swap out the old data with the new img file I obtained from my Nuvi 780. Since my old data set is configured a bit differently and points to things in different directions, it didn't quite work like others found it to work. However, I was able to poke around and with the knowledge of how others did it, tried some things and managed to get it. So now it works.

Note: can now be used to view and install any mapsets, including non-Garmin ones; it’s not as good as MapSource, but it is free, and is also available for both PC and Mac. See for more info. But if you’ve lost or misplaced your install disk, you’re out of luck; while Garmin has a downloadable updated version of MapSource on their website, it requires that you have the earlier version installed on your disk. Try and install it directly, and it will abort after telling you it can’t find a previous version. There’s a way around that “earlier version” limitation that lets those with a legitimate reason install MapSource on their computer.

Well • If you have a Garmin GPS, it’s good for uploading and download data, including maps if your Garmin unit supports them and you have the data • Open files in gdb, mps, gpx and loc formats • Create waypoints, routes and tracks; the track editor in particular is easy to use. • It comes with a world road basemap, and you can add maps from free sources like, or the site, or even make your own • Save point, route or track data in gdb, mps, gpx, tab-delimited text and DXF formats • If you poke around this site, you’ll find other useful free GPS software that does some of what MapSource does, plus many things that MapSource doesn’t. Take a look in particular at postings in the categories for,.

Note: The sequence to execute Main.msi and then Setup.exe is important to avoid “Previous MapSource not found!” error. • Garmin MapSource is now installed. I recommend installing a second map (good idea is to install the map legend so you can get to know the layout!!!) because you need to have two maps installed before the map selector shows up. Note I still recommend to install Garmin Basecamp nevertheless: Get it here: Attention Mapsource 6.13 6.14 and 6.15 Users: Please update to at least 6.16.1 -- earlier Mapsource versions miss a lot of ways and streets and make the maps unusable. Advanced Way of Installation without already having Mapsource installed • First install at least one VeloMap (just run the.exe) • Attention, Mapsource will not install correctly until you have a at least one map installed. So if you forgot step 1, do it now! Go to and download the map(s) of your choice and install at least one map! • Download latest MapSource from Garmin ( ). • Unpack or extract the content of setup_MapSource.exe using 7zip (), WinRAR or another good unpacker. • From the extracted files, first run MAIN.msi. • Then, run Setup.exe.

Download MapSource software updater from Garmin. The version as of December 4, 2007 is 6.13.6, and the trick also works on Map Source version 6.13.5. Unpack or extract the content of MapSource_6136.exe downloaded using WinRAR. From the extracted files, run MAIN.msi. Then, run Setup.exe. Note: The sequence to execute Main.msi and then Setup.exe is important to avoid “Previous MapSource not found!” error.

There is a catch however. Garmin only provides updates, no actual installation packages. Therfore below I describe two ways how you can install Mapsource legally nevertheless. People who have bought a Garmin GPS will have a CD shipped with it including Mapsource. I recommend to use the most uptodate version by Garmin (as of writing this is 6.16.3) Earlier versions of Mapsource (also 6.13.6) are now incompatible with the openmtbmaps as they do not show all ways and streets!!!! Use at least 6.16.1 or higher.

It is just over a gig. I then renamed it to PC_BASEMAP2.IMG and put it in the c: garmin pcbsmp2 directory. It will not load. Trying to run mapsource says there is an error with maps and if I say run anyways, it will just open the generic map. In looking at what was there originaly, not only was there a PC_BASEMAP2.img file, but there was also a PC_BASEMAP2.TDB file. I have no TDB files on my nuvi 760 to copy over. Any ideas on how I can get this to work?

Having a working Mapsource install without commercial maps can be useful if you're looking at custom mapping options. (otherwise you need to go out and buy Trip and Waypoint Manager to use custom maps).

• Create a folder named Garmin on local C: drive. • Inside the C: Garmin folder, create or rename a file as MapSource.exe.

Garmin Basecamp is the best program to use the OpenMTBMaps and Velomaps. Attention – Mapinstall 4.2.0 – which comes with Basecamp 4.7.0 is heavily bugged, wait for a fixed version or downgrade to 4.6.2 Windows or 4.6.3 OSx More about how to downgrade Basecamp here. Mac OSx – Windows: Why to not use Garmin Mapsource anymore! Attention – I do not recommend to use Mapsource anymore except for sending maps to older generation devices! Some reasons: a) It’s not developed anymore since 2010 b) It does not show OpenMTBMap or VeloMap contourlines! (it will send them though to your device) c) It has no proper database to store tracks or routes – yes undertanding the concept of the database in Basecamp is not easy – but once you got it, it is pretty well done!

(otherwise you need to go out and buy Trip and Waypoint Manager to use custom maps). I've actually run a similar question by Garmin as far as is it a violation of the license agreement to use the downloaded mapsource without a previous license. Basically they don't care (at least so said the guy I spoke to). The error message is just there to stop people thinking they can have mapsource with maps for free off the website. Do I have to unlock the map and if so, where do I get the code from (I don't see one on the SD Card). Thanks to you and Tim for a brilliant site! Would be great if there was a thread in reviews for the nuvi 310. Just curious what anyone who already had 2009 maps on a nuvi received, actual NT maps or just Waypoint and Trip Manager (Mapsource with basemaps)?

• Fixed an issue where MapSource did not remember the grid setting correctly. • Fixed an issue with the updating process. • Fixed sort by number of via points in the route tab.

All this to get a real map. Anyway, I did this with some success. However, wile experimenting, I copied over my TOPO map. It overlaid the basic map (incorrectly), and remained even though I erased it. So I copied the 2009.0 file and this worked, however, the bad TOPO remnants remained? Next, I deleted the c garmin folder, and I deleted the trash, went to the, add and removed programs tool, and removed both the trainer and mapsorce programs.

Also, when I tried to do routing, it would only allow me to connect from point to point with a straight line. There is no item in edit->preference to change the routing method as in the help pages.

MapSource has been dropped in favor of new Garmin products: Garmin MapSource is software that lets you create, view, and edit waypoints, routes, and tracks on your computer and transfer them to your navigation device for your next trip. It was previously included with DVD/CD versions of our map products. MapSource is no longer included with DVD/CD versions of our maps.

• Create, view, and edit waypoints, routes, and tracks. • Plan extensive or complicated routes, in which you travel to several locations in an order you specify. • Transfer waypoints, routes and tracks between your computer and your device. • Transfer selected map from your computer to your device.

Just to echo that this technique still works (the technique of the original post) For the guy just a few post back (dmillermail) I was walking a friend through this from across country. He got the same message so we started over again. Apparently, when he thought he installed the 'training center' he didn't do something right and it didn't really install.

I can live with the map 'Chunks' and how it is displayed in an odd fashion. The problem however, is that the Map-Tools selector icon no longer works. Well, the icon works but it will not allow me to select any portion of the map.

Download MapSource for free to have your GPS software and hardware up to date.

I downloaded and installed Training Center, downloaded and installed MapSource, copied gmapprom.img from my nuvi 780 and renamed it pc_basemap2.img on my laptop. MapSource is working great with the full 1.1GB CN NA NT 2010 map displayed complete with all POIs.

I only had the base map. Very limited data set. Here's how I got around it and now have the map that came with my GPS in MapSource Your 850 should have a map installed. If you look on the Flash drive via USB, you should see a huge file ~ 1Gig in size. Mine was called gmapprom.img.

If you're the owner of a Garmin GPS hardware device, you should already know MapSource, the software associated to the majority of devices designed by this leading global positioning systems company. Decide the route you're going to follow MapSource can be used from a computer to be able to configure and decide the itinerary which will be followed during a trip before leaving our house, something which will make it much easier to move between designated places once on board our vehicle. The only problem with this software and the associated devices is that as time goes by the maps no longer correspond with the reality due to different changes, like a road changing direction or being closed due to road works or new installations, making it more difficult to drive around. Update your maps with the latest information. But this can be solved thanks to installing the updates to MapSource, which introduce all the new maps on the computer, allowing you to send them to the device afterwards.

What’s New • Fixed some map display issues (22s & 71s labels instead of highway names). • Fixed Pedestrian routing. • Fixed some other routing issues. • Fixed Find Nearest Waypoints issue. • Fixed vertical profile custom scale settings (right-clicking on the scale of the vertical profile). • Fixed selection issue (waypoints were not de-selected when selecting a track before).

• Install the MapSouce by running downloaded MapSource installation executable, MapSoruce_XXXX.exe such as MapSource_6156.exe. Method above proved to work on almost all version of MapSource, including MapSource version 6.15.11 and version 6.16.0.3 Beta. The trick is useful is you have lost or forgotten the MapSource installation disc and wants to upload and download maps and other data to Garmin GPS receivers, or for GPS addicts who needs Map Source to open files in gdb, mps, gpx and loc formats, create waypoints, routes and tracks; view maps especially free maps; save point, route or track data in gdb, mps, gpx, tab-delimited text and DXF formats; and export waypoint, route and track data directly to Google Earth. However, if you have any Garmin maps, installing the maps will also install the original and genuine copy of MapSource.

I'm having a problem. I'm having troubles getting a current map to work with MapSource. I have a map update (That I cant use - see below). Someone posted a, how to copy a map from your gps (or elsewhere. As long as it has that has the 'img' extension), and renaming it to the, original name of, pc_basemap2.img (found in the, Garmin PCBSMP2).

Anyway, I did this with some success. However, wile experimenting, I copied over my TOPO map.

I have gStart on the quickstart tray. When I click on it, it says no gps detected. But I can see the nuvi255 from the windows explorer. Also, when I installed the training center, it ask me to plug in the usb cable into the pc with nuvi255 started and connected to the other end, and wait for windows to install the driver. But, I waited for a long time, and there is no activity, so I click next, and it finished installing training center. Maybe that is why gStart did not detect the nusi255. Please advise what I can try next.
