I'm looking for information about a safe that is in a building I purchased. I was unable to find a serial number. You would be looking for 'Herring Hall Marvin.

In 1979 banks using Diebold ATMs included Bank of America, Citibank, Marine Midland, and the Shawmut Corp. Through the early 1980s, the business press portrayed Diebold ’s ATM dominance over IBM and NCR as the pin-striped battle between David and a two-headed Goliath. “Those three letters I-B-M are the first thing we think of when we awake, ” Forbes quoted Earl Wearstler, then Diebold executive vice president, as saying in 1980. But Diebold held its ground, working out a reciprocal sales agreement with Bunker Ramo, a maker of microcomputer-driven teller terminals with strong sales in and the U.S. To gain access to the Canadian ATM market, the company signed a sales and service agreement with Phillips, the international electronics company. In 1985 and 1986, ATM orders from banks sagged in pace with a general slowdown in bank equipment sales.

Smiley, manufactured druggists scales in Chicago from 1890 to 1895. Some had the name ``Smiley`` imprinted on them, while others were manufactured under the name of ``Druggists Scale Works.`` So far I`ve had no luck in trying to locate any of the scales he manufactured. Is there a source? A-Write to the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors, Bob Stein, 111 N.

The company, led by longtime president and CEO Raymond Koontz, decided to respond by looking ahead and taking a chance on ATMs. Diebold invested heavily in electronic research, applied computer technology, ergonomic design, and and, in 1973, introduced the first ATM model. The ATM trade turned out to be a natural for the company that had been doing business with banks for over a century. While Diebold was a relative newcomer to this type of computer technology, its experience with cash-handling systems and security concerns made Diebold ATMs an attractive choice for banks.

Each cam has an obvious notch; when all 3 are lined up in the same place a bar will fall down into the row of notches and the safe can be opened. So, find the notches, line them up under the bar (you have to dial the safe as if you were actually opening it; turn the dial left until the first one is in place, right until the second one is in place, and right until the third one is in place. Or the other way around, right-left-right). If you pay attention to the number dial, the number that is lined up with the indicator when dialing each notch is that portion of the combo. Does that help? Generally, if you can access the back of the lock, you can open it as described.

Got the combo? Internet that could explain the correct way to enter a combination and also tell me how many numbers are in the combination. Virtual all safes are either three or (less commonly) four numbers. Obviously, each of those numbers may be more than one digit. If it's three then the most common sequence would be: Turn the dial left 4 times to the first number, right 3 times to the next, left 2 times to the last, then right until the dial stops, at which point the handle should turn. Note that if folk are even slightly clueful, almost ANY number in the building may be the combo. They may have recorded it as phone number, a zip code, a customer number, a price, you-name-it.

Calling a locksmith is fine, but he'd have to come on site as I am not going to be able to lift it again without damaging an already borrowed lift truck. The brass plate on the inside of the door looks like it will come off easily enough.

The inexpensive 'fire proof (gag)safes' (I'd call them 'containers' not 'safes'.) won't provide much protection against entry. You can mix and match by, e.g., putting a fire proof container inside your safe.

Several factors motivated Diebold ’s first expansion. Brought the safe and vault business as a whole out of rough years with a flurry of government armament contracts. Following the dismal economy of the 1930s, the war created a demand for manufacturers accustomed to high-precision work with hardened steels. For Diebold, as well as its main competitors York Safe and Mosler Safe Co., the war effort spelled a windfall.

In 1942 Diebold, which had previously grossed around $3 million per year, brought in $40 million. When the dust settled and the contracts disappeared with the end of the war, the company was fiscally sound but its executives were having trouble agreeing on Diebold ’s path of postwar reconversion.

Ness, who became chairman of the board, engineered a spectacular takeover of York Safe. Located in York,, York was the largest prewar producer of safes and vaults, with a strong sales base on the East Coast. However, the company had let its sales division deteriorate during the war, while Diebold ’s was intact.

Cleaning up the exterior of the safe would probably be good too if you are planning to sell it. If I was in your shoes I would find a locksmith in the area who has experience working with safes and pay that person to open it for you. Trying to find a combination written down somewhere it pointless. Do you even know when the last time the safe was used??? Well, I'm not actually 'trying' to find the combination, but I figured I might stumble across it. There are many paper records that I'm gonna go through just because I'm a curious person. I can guarantee it's been longer than 10 years since it's been used!

However I can turn the handle and open the safe also when the dial is at number 7 and do not have to go to 0. Sometimes I do not hear the click at the last given number (7) but the door will still open.

In the 1930s, Diebold began to diversify. In slightly over a decade, the company made seven major moves toward expansion. In 1936, the company acquired United Metal Products Co., also of Canton, a manufacturer of hollow metal doors and door frames. In 1938 Diebold made its first entrance into the office equipment business by introducing the Cardineer Rotary File System. This was followed in 1944 with the acquisition of the Visible Records Equipment Company of Chicago, a former subsidiary and a manufacturer of vertical filing systems and other record-keeping equipment. The same year, Diebold bought the patents and manufacturing rights for Flofilm, a process that allowed companies to microfilm records in-house with a one-hour automatic developer.

First, I did not have a full set of hinge acorns so I had some acorns made of solid brass and my plan was to brass plate the handle and dial. But I do not like the look of these shiny brass acorns and was wondering if I can nickel or chrome plate these solid brass acorns (and of course do the same with the dial and handle).

In July of 1990, Diebold, the company that professed to having nightmares about IBM a decade earlier, announced a joint venture with its erstwhile competitor, which was dubbed Inter-Bold. I am hoping that this will help. Also, I am looking for the correct procedure on how to enter the combination (in case I do get lucky and find it some where) It has dates of 1907 and 1908 for patents. Also, the dial is numbered from 20 to 100 with a blank spot. It looks like this safe may have been drilled twice already judging from the plugs that seem o be installed in the door. Any help would be appreciated.

Herring Hall Marvin Safe Company Herring Hall Marvin is an AWE facility for 1943-1993 and a DOE facility for 1995. Workers during the AWE years are eligible for Part B claims and workers during the DOE year are eligible for both Part B and Part E claims. Intermittently from the 1943 to 1951, the Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Company machined natural uranium metal slugs from rolled stock under subcontract to DuPont and the University of Chicago. During the period of residual contamination, as designated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and as noted in the dates above, employees of subsequent owners and operators of this facility are also covered under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. The former Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Company, now owned by the Diebold Company was located at 1550 Grand Boulevard in Hamilton, Ohio. During the 1940's this company machined uranium slugs under subcontract with a prime Department of Energy contractor.

Describe the dial (that sets the type of lock it is real good0 and see if he can/would manipulate, or if worst case, drill a small hole. It WOULD be repairable, so that it doesn't show, especially assuming you are going to repaint? It will be nice to store some important documents in and I imagine the price for opening it is comparable to the price of one of those decent fire proof safes. It is important to distinguish between 'safe' (in the sense of a box that is hard to get into) and 'fire proof' (protection from elevated temperatures). Your safe won't provide much fire protection.
